RedBag FAQs

What is Red Bag?

The non-profit group Christmas Families runs the Red Bag project to provide a holiday to children whose families
are struggling and in need.

How does Harmony Elementary participate?

Each November, we ask that your student helps around the house or yard or does little chores to earn money for their classroom's ‘Red Bag’ child.  The money that is collected is pooled and then split between all HES classrooms so that each class is working with the same amount of money.
Harmony adopts one child per classroom; the child is specifically selected with the classroom in mind.  Each class receives a child that is their age and is located in the Johnson County area.  The classroom teacher helps the students brainstorm on gift ideas that this child may want, woking from a list of the child’s interests.  The class works together to create a shopping list for our volunteer shoppers.
One parent volunteer per classroom completes the shopping for the 'Red Bag' child, and then brings all items to the classroom for wrapping.  All our students get to help with this effort!
What impact has Harmony Elementary made?
Harmony Elementary has been participating in this program since 1994.  Over the last 22 years that we have raised enough money to provide hundreds of our 'Red Bag' kids with clothes, a warm jacket, basic hygiene items, books and some fun toys.  This program is a good lesson for our children in compassion and teamwork, and gives them an opportunity to know how great it can feel to do something kind for someone in need.
